The single most important thing you do with your body is to consider what you put inside of  it.  It’s what you consume that counts.   Garbage in = garbage out, right??

To be honest, I’m not certain how it’s possible that we survive  living these days without every person being required to take a nutrition class.  There is some majorly crazy stuff that comes nicely and individually packaged… and it’ll last forever!!!!!

When it comes down to it, the human race didn’t need a nutritionist to tell us what to eat until science allowed us to eat funky preservatives or swallow chunky, strange words used to describe what our body was going to attempt to digest.  Of course not all of these scientific advancements are problematic.  Some are life savers.   Some are food sustainers…  I just don’t know how much of them *I’d* personally like in my body!!!

And preservatives and food coloring aside…  Why on earth would you be okay with consuming pesticides and hormones?

When I first discovered that the same hormones given to cows, that allows them to produce more milk, ends up in the milk WE consume, I’ve had a problem.  My body is sensitive to hormones.   Bottles made with BPA give me extreme PMS.  Now tell me how a cow’s hormone wouldn’t affect me?

The answer is that it probably does.  If I stay up for days every time I have half a cup of coffee, then I’m guessing that cow hormones are likely going to affect my body.  Unfortunately, the side effects haven’t affected my “udders” yet…

So why would I knowingly bring hormone-drenched milk to my lips?  I’m not sure I can come up with a good answer for that.  Perhaps the answer is that I don’t want to put that in my body. And what exactly are these hormones doing to my childrens’ bodies??

Even more extreme than the hormones are the pesticides… I am not sure I fathom being okay putting bug killers in my mouth.  Yet, if I purchase fruits and veggies that are not organic, I’m doing just that.   Of course you wash your foods… but would you really still take a risk?  I wouldn’t put a penny that’s been cleaned with Windex in my mouth… even if I had washed it with a produce cleaner before hand.  Nah… That stuff just doesn’t belong in my body.

I believe that we all know these things on at least a remedial level.  I think we probably all would agree that certain chemicals don’t do our bodies well.   Yet, there is still a demand for them, hence why they still sell so much of it in the big grocery stores.  However, I believe that most of it is ignorance.  Ignorance such as “Where do I find food that isn’t toxic?”  and “Organic is nice and all, but it doesn’t taste as good,” or “I can’t afford it.”

But really, how can you not afford it?  Maybe it means you eat less… maybe you buy less… But I’ve discovered that it doesn’t have to always work like that.  I found a local organic grocer nearby, and their produce is CHEAPER than what you pay for in the big chains– even their non-organics!  It required some effort on my part, but I compared prices between the two, and was THRILLED that it was less expensive to go with the organic stuff.

Also, I am pleased to buy from a local grocery store.  I love that I’m giving my money to the people who are like-minded.  I love that I’m helping support paychecks of the employees that choose what’s right over what’s easy.  That alone makes me smile.
