Lavandula angustifolia

Best known for its calming, relaxing effects.  Flowers are harvested as buds.  Contains linalyl acetate, linalool, tannins, coumarins, and flavonoids.  Mild sedative, counteracts nervousness and dizziness.  Helps headaches, migraines, stomach ailments, nervous intestinal disorders such as flatulence and bloating.  Soothes sore muscles and reduces swelling.  Helpful for bruises and sprains.  Alleviates depression and induces drowsiness. Bathe in it to help circulation and low blood pressure.   Placed among linens, deters moths.  Hung in rooms, repels flies and mosquitoes.   Can be eaten in salad.  Antiseptic that will kill bacteria including typhoid, diphtheria, streptococcus, pneumococcus, and an antidote to snake venom.

Externally, good for burns, infected wounds, eczema and acne.  Prevents hair loss, relieves rheumatism, and joint pain.

Tea: 2 tsp lavender flowers with 1 cup of boiling water, steeped for 10 minutes; or 10 g dried sprigs in 1 liter boiling water.

Lavender Oil: To make oil, put 30 g of fresh flowers in 10 oz olive oil, and macerate for 3 days in the sun. Strain and then repeat several times.  Combine 15 drops of oil with 1 oz oil.  Use as massage oil to help headaches, migraines.  Or 5 drops of oil in 1 cup of water, dip rag into infusion and place on the back of the neck.

Lavender Vinegar: Steep fresh flowers in white vinegar for one week, shaking the closed bottle daily.  Strain.

In magic: Remedies the panting and passion of the heart.  For love, protection, sleep, preservation of chastity (with rosemary), longevity, purification, happiness, and peace.  Attracts love.  Smoldered to induce sleep.  Scattered about home brings peacefulness.  Departs sorrow and increases joy if looked upon.  Conducive to long life.  Dream manifestation.
